I Am Resolved To...

by Diane Brown

And the people said unto Joshua, The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey (Joshua 24:24).

The month of January heralds in a New Year and many magazine articles give lists of New Year resolutions. I came across one such article that listed ten resolutions. A few made sense, some were silly, and one was quite ridiculous. These worldly views of resolutions may make the believer throw the whole idea of resolutions out the window. So I decided to take a closer look at the meaning of a Òresolution.Ó  What the Lord taught me made think about the word in a different light. According to Webster resolve means to change/transform or to decide or make up your mind about something. Joshua 24 sheds light on how to go about making a resolution that would incline our hearts unto God. Godly resolutions take planning and work. Godly resolutions are also not just a yearly fling.

1. Joshua challenges the people to make a resolve. This resolve should be ours too.
Now, therefore, fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the gods which your fatherÕs served . . . choose you this day whom ye will serve . . . but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord (14-15).

2. Israel Õs specific resolve dealt with putting away idolatry (14-16). They were to incline their hearts unto God. What do you need to put away in your life? Replace it with something that would incline your heart unto God.

3. The people verbally repeated three times that they would resolve to serve the Lord (16, 21, 24). Once you make a resolve, state it verbally to someone such as your mate.

4. Joshua warned the people what would happen if their resolve was in an ungodly direction (19-20). Search the Word and ask yourself what will happen if you do not make a needed resolve to incline your heart unto God.

5. Finally, Joshua wrote the resolve down and took a great stone as a witness to the resolve to serve the Lord (25-27). Write down your resolve and put it where you can see it daily. Resolutions—changes in our life to incline our hearts unto God—take planning and work. Are you so resolved?

I am resolved no longer to linger, Charmed by the worldÕs delight;
Things that are higher, things that are nobler, These have allured my sight.

I am resolved to follow the Savior, Faithful and true each day;
Heed what He sayeth, do what He willeth, He is the living way.
