Choosing the Right Pilot

 by Diane Brown

 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. . .
 (Proverbs 3:5).

My son told me his friend (age ten) flies planes. After asking some probing questions, I found out my sonÕs friend did indeed fly planes, but his father was in the main pilot seat. The boy was safe as he ÒflewÓ the plane because an experienced pilot was right beside him. His father knew how to read the instruments and knew how to use them properly. Without a proper pilot navigating the plane, the plane would surely have crashed.

Saul thought he knew how to navigate his own life before his conversion. On the road to Damascus God showed Saul that the wrong pilot was at the helm of SaulÕs life. SaulÕs response: ÒLord, what wilt thou have me to do?Ó (Acts 9:6) Saul decided that God would be at the helm of his life. Saul, later called Paul, became GodÕs chosen vessel to bring the Gospel to the Gentiles. God used Paul not only to spread the Gospel but also to be an example to all believers through the ages. PaulÕs life is an example of humility. He knew that none of what he accomplished was done without daily provisions and direction from the ÒGreat PilotÓ (Phil. 4:13).

So it is in our lives. We awake each day and decide who will be at the helm of our life. Will we live unto ourselves or will we ask God to help us navigate our day?

                             Jesus Saviour, pilot me
                             Over lifeÕs tempestuous sea;
                             Unknown waves before me roll,
                             Hiding rock and treacherous shoal;
                             Chart and compass came from Thee:
                             Jesus Saviour, pilot me.

. . . In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths
 (Proverbs 3:6).
