We Have Need of Him

by Cherie Campbell

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me ( Psalm 63:1, 8).

When David wrote these verses, he knew that only God could satisfy his loneliness and deepest desires.  Do we truly believe that only God can satisfy our deepest longings?  It is true!  Only God can satisfy, but we must seek Him!

What would it be like to truly live a life of desire for God? to seek Him early? to truly thirst for Him? to sincerely long for God? to follow hard after Him?  Some commentators used these words to describe the verses above:  eagerness; impatient desire; intenseness; insatiable longings after communion with God; laborious exertion; perseverance in seeking.  ÒFolloweth hardÓ means Òglued together, cling to, or cleave to; to be firmly united with strong affection.Ó  We can cling to Him and GodÕs right hand will hold us fast, never letting us go.

Why do we struggle to find time to spend with God?  We get to work on time; we go to the dentist; we never miss our time at the grocery store.  Do not miss your appointed time with the Lord.  Nothing is more important or more satisfying.  Nothing is more helpful as we seek guidance for our day.  Nothing is more comforting or provides more sweetness.

May the Word of God dwell richly
In my heart from hour to hour,
So that all may see I triumph
Only through His powÕr.
