The Greatness of God

by Cherie Campbell

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable (Psa 145:3).

Psalm 145 is a wonderful place to learn some of the many attributes of our great God.  We learn of His mighty acts (v.4); the glorious honour of His majesty (v. 5); His great goodness and righteousness (v.7); His graciousness, compassion, longsuffering and great mercy (v.8); and His power (v. 11).  Our great God also is our provider (v. 15); and He hears our cry and saves us (v. 19).

The second part of verse 3 tells us that GodŐs greatness is unsearchable.  We could never completely learn the whole of GodŐs greatness, but we can search out everything that He has given us in His Word.  A wonderful exercise for us would be to go to Psalm 145 in our Bibles and underline each mention of the greatness of our God.  Maybe we could keep a running list of all of the attributes of our great God as we read His Holy Word.

As we meditate on the attributes of our great God and learn about His greatness, this will naturally lead us to praise Him.  David says, ŇEvery day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and everÓ (Psalm 145:2).

Not all the minds of all the centuries shall suffice to search out the unsearchable riches of God: he is past finding out; and, therefore, his deserved praise is still above and beyond all that we can render to him.

To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee forever (Psa 30:12).
