Every Word of the WORD of GOD

by Susan Brinley

But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).

Recently I had the opportunity to introduce our 9-year-old son to using StrongÕs Concordance for his Bible curriculum.  I wondered how to effectively present this study tool to emphasize the importance of every word in the Bible.  As we explored the word hand, we were surprised and pleased to find several meanings, from the more obvious physical application to the ultimate description of Òthe hand of GodÓ as a means of strength and power exercised on our behalf.

Our journey into the concordance together renewed my interest in reviewing some favorite verses pointing to the value of Scripture.   As I looked more intently at a few words in Jeremiah 15:16, my heart was renewed by the power and precise language of the Word of God.  When familiar words were expanded with greater definition, they gained a new emphasis.  LetÕs look at the verse:

ÒThy words  (messages, promises, teaching, telling -- what God thinks!)
were found   (to come forth, ready!)
and I did eat them  (devour, consume!);
and thy word was unto me the joy  (greatly bright!) and rejoicing of mine heart:
for I am called  (addressed!)
by thy name,  O LORD God of hostsÓ  (Jeremiah 15:16).

Suddenly the familiar passage became fresh and focused on God anew.  And I am called by His name!   My heart responded with new appreciation for the Eternal Book we sometimes begin to take for granted.  It is alive and active, even as it is the very Word of our Eternal God.
