Putting God First
by Cherie Campbell
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is (Psalm 63:1).
One of my Bible teachers told us that he rises in the morning anticipating a blessing from reading GodŐs Word. He anticipates GodŐs revealing some new truth to Him. Do we eagerly await those precious moments we can have with our Lord?
Our minds are crowded with what we must accomplish that day, what appointments we must meet, and what errands we must run. Sometimes it just seems impossible to have our devotions first thing in the morning, even if that is the desire of our hearts. A few suggestions may help us all to put God first in our day, even when it is not possible to have a time of Bible reading first thing in the morning.
Before we even get out of bed we can pray for the help of GodŐs Holy Spirit. Pray for help in putting God first and for that Ňeager anticipationÓ as we wait on God. If we cannot have our full devotional time first thing, we can at least read a few verses of GodŐs Word before we begin our day and then determine that we will spend more time in the Word as soon as it is possible during that day.
Another way to put God first is to have verse cards nearby as we go through our day. What a wonderful way to be reminded of GodŐs help and promises.
We can also find other ways to enjoy GodŐs presence during the day. (I enjoy having an open hymnal on my dresser as I am preparing for my day.) When we are doing household chores, we can listen to Bible readings or sermons on tape.
Finally, if whatever we are doing is not working, we should change and find another way. Maybe we need to get up earlier or change our daily routine. At least we can try something different. Our goal should be that the meditations of our hearts would be acceptable to the Lord.
Oh, to be like Thee! blessed Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer.
Gladly IŐll forfeit all of earthŐs treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.
Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,
Blessed Redeemer, pure as Thou art!
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
