Renewing My Choice

by Susan Brinley

According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy an without blame, before Him in love (Ephesians 1:4).

While reading recently, I came across an observation by the main character in evaluating her relationship with her husband. She concluded that he (her husband) loved her and chose her, but that she herself, while she loved him and married him as well, had never "chosen him" in the sense that she had never placed his will/opinion/desires above her own. Even though she was in this marriage, and a measure of love was indeed present, because she had not (yet) given her own will up in favor of his will, life would never be quite "right" for them.

Although not a biblical story, in principle I immediately drew a parallel between this fictitious situation and my own heart. Think about this for a moment: God loved me and chose me. I responded to His love and offer of salvation and desired His presence in my life; yet somehow as the initial joys and wonderment have subsided, and weÕve been "together" many years, I have to ask myself, "Do I still truly choose Him and His will over my own today?"

His commitment to us is amazing, faithful and enduring. In His constancy, He chose us in spite of our faltering, erratic and often disappointing behavior. I am saved and secure in our relationship, but my will taking precedence over His will can still be a problem. While His commitment to me is steadfast and the epitome of commitment itself, my own is humanly weak and needs daily fortification in the Word, in prayer, and in obedience.

Father, renew my heart and commitment to Thy will today.I delight to do thy will, O God, thy law is written on my heart (Psalm 40:8).
