Sufficient Grace and Perfect Strength
by Cherie Campbell
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me
(II Corinthians 12:9).
We are all familiar with the amazing grace that saves our souls. The Bible also teaches that we live by grace. How could we possibly live each day without this divine enablement, this help from the Holy Spirit?
This verse often comes to mind when dealing with difficult situations, which happen with amazing frequency. We know without a doubt that the Lord brings circumstances into our lives to teach us more about Him, but we usually do not like these circumstances. Paul did not like his either, even though he admitted it was from God and was given that Paul might not be overly exalted. The thing Paul prayed for was denied, but he was given something infinitely better: GodÕs sufficient grace and His perfect strength.
Could it be that God is also teaching us about our own weakness and our dependence on Him? Dr. Plummer wrote in his commentary that ÒWhere human strength abounds, the effects of Divine power may be overlooked.Ó We need GodÕs sufficient grace and His perfect strength, but we also need to realize that it is all from Him! We are all so unworthy of anything that God has given us, but that is what makes it grace!
He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater;
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase.
To added affliction He addeth His mercy;
To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.
His love has no limit, His grace has no measure,
His powÕr has no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus,
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again!
