Spiritual Warfare

by Cherie Campbell

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
(Eph. 6:10-11, NASV).

Dr. Ironside writes in his commentary on Ephesians, ÒWe are to stand against the wiles of the devil, for in every conceivable manner he will seek to hinder us from making progress in our Christian livesÓ (315).  These principalities and powers are Òdoing their utmost to keep Christians living on a low, worldly level, and thus failing to enjoy the victory that is theirs by right because of their relationship to the Lord Jesus ChristÓ (304).

Be daily strengthened in the Lord.  Realize that the devil is doing his best to keep you from the Word and from prayer.  He doesn't want you to honor and glorify the Lord with your life and does everything he can to keep you from doing what is right.  If the devil came to us each morning and told us exactly what he was going to do that day to keep us from pleasing the Lord, we would never stand for it.  But his ways are sneaky.  We don't realize what the devil is up to until he completes his work and we are defeated again.

Isn't it wonderful that the Lord gives us everything we need for this battle we face.  We read about the Òwhole armor of GodÓ in Ephesians 6:11-17.  This passage ends ÒWith all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saintsÓ (NASV).

We must be alert and not ignorant of the Òschemes of the devil.Ó  Don't find yourself absolutely powerless when your time of trial comes.  Stay in the Word.  Be fervent in prayer.  Our only hope for victory comes in the strength of the Lord.
