Comfort Food
by Diane Brown
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort (2 Cor. 1:3).
If you are like most ladies, you like to look for tantalizing recipes to try out on your family or friends. Food is one ÒgiftÓ that we can give to others in need. Moreover, most of us have been on the receiving end of a time-saving meal while a family member recovers from surgery. A kind friend may have left a plate of cookies with a verse of encouragement on your doorstep during a difficult time. Our family has received such meals in time of need and the meals were always such a blessing! It was comforting to know that someone was praying and showed their care in a tangible way.
GodÕs Word is Òfood for comfort.Ó His Word is to be both given and received. First we receive comfort through our daily personal devotions. When we are burdened with trials, we can, through the Word, receive the Òcomfort of the scriptures.Ó (Rom. 15:4) God says we are to ÒcryÓ unto Him. We are to Òfly as a bird to his mountain.Ó God knows we need Him. Second, we are to give the ÒcomfortÓ of the scriptures. We can help other sisters in Christ remember these truths:
Be comforted in the fact that:
* the Holy Spirit is the Comforter and indwells each believer (John 14:16).
* the only Comfort that satisfies comes from the WordÒThy Rod and thy Staff they comfort meÓ (Psalm 23:4).
* God is the source of comfort. So why look to anyone or anything else (2 Cor. 1:3).
* you are a sojourner in this world and God is preparing a place for you unimaginable where you will be ÒcomfortedÓ for all eternity (I Thess. 4:18).
* God loves you and does all for your good (Rom 8:28, Phil 2:1).
O boundless love divine! how shall this tongue of mine
To wandÕring mortals tell the matchless grace divine
That I, a child of hell should in His image shine!
The Comforter has come!
