The Older Woman
by Marianne Carpenter
That they [older women] may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, that the word of the Lord may not be dishonored (Titus 2:4, 5; NASB).
I became convicted that I should be following these verses as an older woman, but I had excuses.
First, most of the young women I knew had Bible college training, making them spiritually superior to me (I thought). Younger women hear a lot of advice through books about marriage and child raising and would resent my opinion on these matters. And lastly, the older I get the more I realize I know very little, as I see children raised ÒrightÓ turn out poorly, and children raised ÒwrongÓ used by God.
Then I realized the outline from Titus 2:4, 5 is quite simple. I sought to give younger women scripture and counsel from wise women such as Elisabeth Elliot and Amy Carmichael.
The outline is as follows:
To love their husbands ÒSpend more time thanking God for your husband than you do in criticizing him. Pray for him earnestly and daily, asking the Lord to help you to practice the self-giving, sacrificial love that He showed to us on the cross.Ó Elisabeth Elliot .
To love their children--1 Corinthians 13:4-7
To be sensible--Psalms 90:12
To be pure--Philippians 4:8, Romans 13:12-14
To be workers at home--Proverbs 31:27
To be kind-- ÒIf I can write an unkind letter, speak an unkind word, think an unkind thought without grief and shame, then I know nothing of Calvary loveÓ
Amy Carmichael: To be subject to their own husbands; ÒSubmission-making it easier for your husband to do his job; contributing to his purpose.Ó Elisabeth Elliot
One commentary puts the age of the older women at over 60, but no matter what your age there is a younger woman who looks to you for an example. As Susan Brinley aptly said in her recent Monday Morning Manna, ÒIÕll always be older than someone else. Therefore, I need to be a good example of how to live in this present age.Ó |
