Daily Communion with God

by Cherie Campbell

While I was in the library looking for a book I was required to read for a class, I happened upon a slim volume by one of my favorite authors, Matthew Henry.  This book was originally written as part of a larger volume in 1712 but was reprinted over 50 years ago under the title, The Quest for Communion with God. This smaller volume has just three points, illustrated by the three verses from Psalms.

I.  Showing How to Begin Every Day With God
ÒMy voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.Ó   Psalm 5:3

II.  Showing How to Spend the Day With God
ÒOn thee do I wait all the day.Ó   Psalm 25:5

III.  Showing How to Close the Day With God
ÒI will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me to dwell in safety.Ó   Psalm 4:8

My heart was challenged anew to accept this call to begin each day with God, to spend each day with Him, and to close each day in communion with Him.  I want my every desire to be toward Him.  The most amazing thing is that even though we are but dust, the Lord desires and gets pleasure from our feeble attempts at communion with Him.  He sees us.  He knows our motives.  He knows our weaknesses.  But He still desires us to ÒwaitÓ on Him.  Matthew Henry defines waiting on God as Òliving a life of desire toward him, delighting in Him, having a dependence on Him, and a devotedness to Him.Ó

May we all accept this challenge to make a daily appointment with God and keep it.  Nothing can be more important in our lives than this precious time we spend with God.  We learn, we grow, we are convicted and challenged, and then we can go and share what we have learned with others.

ÒDo we not know that we have daily work to do for God, and our own souls, the work of the day that is to be done in its day?  And have we not then business with God, to beg of him to show us what he would have us to do, to direct us in it, and strengthen us for it?Ó   Matthew Henry
