A Useful Witness
by Susan Brinley
A true witness delivereth souls. . . (Proverbs 14:25a).
Witness something we do every day by choice or by circumstance. We willingly witness some occasions: a friend's wedding, a graduation, a milestone birthday. Sometimes we are unwitting witnesses of an incident such as a fender bender or other unexpected event.
So what distinguishes a good or useful witness? Having had some experience with preparing a witness and being a witness myself, I see some simple parallels between a good witness legally and a good witness as a believer.
A good witness is credible because of the lifestyle and character already established by the witnessÕ daily life. Dependability, concern for others, and a disciplined life all contribute to the strength of the witnessÕ credibility and give the message greater impact.LetÕs live right.
A good witness accurately tells of a specific incident or incidents of which he or she has firsthand knowledge no hearsay, no anecdotes about someone else. A good witness relates what happened, personally and specifically. LetÕs tell what Jesus Christ has personally done for us.
A good witness is willing to be involved; truth does not have to be demanded, pried, or coerced. This separates a ÒgoodÓ witness from a ÒreluctantÓ or ÒhostileÓ witness. Many people today donÕt like to ge involved, or are fearful of awkwardness or personal inconvenience. A good witness does not worry about Òself,Ó but speaks truth for anotherÕs benefit. LetÕs choose anotherÕs eternal need over our personal comfort.
For thou shalt be His witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard (Acts 22:15).
