Under His Wings

by Marianne Carpenter

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler ( Ps.91:4).

Mother always raised chickens on the farm where I grew up. One of the funniest sights was when baby chicks would run to hide under the mother hen. She fluffed her feathers out, settled down, and appeared to sit on the chicks. But you had better beware she might fly at you and peck if you came too close to her chicks!

God cares for His own like a mother bird protects her young. We can run to God any time we need protection and comfort. In the midst of lifeÕs trials and tribulations, we can seek God.

ÒKeep me as the apple of the eyes, hide me under the shadow of thy wings.Ó Ò Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.Ó Ò How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.Ó ÒThe Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel , under whose wings thou art come to trust.Ó (Ps.17:8; 57:1; 36:7; Ruth 2:12)

What are your needs today? Have you received an unfavorable report from your doctor? Did the phone call in the night bring bad news of your elderly parent or adult children? Are you suffering from pressure at work? Are you overwhelmed by being wife, mother, cook, home economist, chauffeur, and teacher, all in one? Are your pains and physical conditions depressing you? Run to the Lord and seek your comfort under the shadow of His wings.

How often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings (Matt. 23:37).

Under His wings I am safely abiding,
Tho the night deepens and tempests are wild;
Still I can trust Him I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me and I am His child.
Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.
