A Three-Mile Radiance
by Susan Brinley
. . . .and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem , and in all Judea, and in Samaria , and unto the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8b ).
While recently visiting with a friend recuperating from a serious fall, we were enjoying our conversation while trying to take her mind off the pain and uncomfortable circumstances. As we talked through several topics, she shared a witnessing emphasis from a friendÕs church: get to know the people in your immediate area and establish a relationship with them with the point in view of sharing Christ and the message of salvation with them. She designated this area as a Òthree-mile radiance.Ó
The idea was to frequent merchants and establishments within a three-mile area of your home; to begin paying inside the gas station and speaking to the cashier rather than paying at the pump; to pay attention to the names of those who serve you at the dry cleaner, grocery store, bank, or server at a restaurant; to specifically look for someone to speak to, get to know, and show a personal interest in; and hopefully, as the Lord allows, to do so on a continuing basis. A genuine smile and a sincere Thank you! are all you need to get started.
For those of us with many Christian friends or places of employment, sometimes getting to know and being involved in the lives of the unsaved creates a quandary about how to find such people. This suggestion offers a great way to present and live our faith, showing a thankful heart, a cheerful spirit, kindness and compassion. After all, our Jerusalem is our very own hometown, where we live right now.
My friend, however, due to her pain medication, perhaps didnÕt quite use the right word when describing the idea that this was to be a three-mile radiance or did she?
Now then we are ambassadors for Christ. . . (II Cor.5:20a).
For the love of Christ constraineth us. . . (II Cor. 5:14a).
