The Gift of Music
by Susan Brinley
It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High (Psalm 92:1).
Perhaps one of our best gifts from a loving Heavenly Father is the gift of music. And thankfully, one doesnÕt necessarily have to be a ÒmusicianÓ to benefit from this wonderful gift. Most of us enjoy unique tastes and preferences in music. We also have our favorites as families, churches, and even nations. The blessing of music is compounded when it honors God and reflects or tells His truths. Music can teach, lead, and change us. Music has the ability to transform thought, bring comfort to a hurting soul, help us to rejoice, inspire and encourage us.
Another amazing aspect of music is its ability to remain in the recesses of our minds. My own earliest recollections of childhood include the cheerful and simple songs of Sunday School and VBS, teaching me with meaningful words and engaging melodies.
ÓWelcome, Welcome to our Sunday SchoolÓ was a weekly chorus not only welcoming visitors, but teaching the ÒregularsÓ to notice and take the time to truly welcome a visitor among us. One memorable VBS song encouraged us to share the Gospel with those around us. And ÒDo You Know That YouÕve Been Born Again?Ó not only asked the right question, but its second verse teaches the answer with how we know we have been born again.
Music provides long term lessons, and the traditional ÒoldÓ hymns are a wealth of excellent teaching of the doctrines of our biblical faith and the testimonies of others who have found God faithful and true. Often a hymn stanza, chorus, or even the turn of a single phrase provides a captivating thought for consideration and meditation.
Our music choices reflect what we choose to love, what we recognize as truth, and what we seek when in need of solace or encouragement. In short, music both reflects and renews our mindsÕ desires. This causes me to consider what music I have chosen to renew my mind, to see if it is fixing my mind on His truth and goodness.
Have you thought about the music that has helped mold your faith? Take a moment to consider some of your favorites, and thank God for His gift of music.
And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away (Isaiah 35:10).
