Searching for Wisdom
by Cherie Campbell
For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the LORD And discover the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:3-6 NASB).
As we read in these verses, we see that it is the Lord who gives wisdom (v. 6). We get knowledge and understanding from His words, but we must first do these two things:
First, we must ÒcryÓ out and Òlift our voicesÓ (v. 3). We must pray diligently, beseeching God to give us His wisdom in a matter. We could never get this divine wisdom on our own or simply by reading GodÕs Word. We need the SpiritÕs enlightenment.
Next, we must search (not simply read) to get this gift (v. 4). We must search as a miner would search for silver. A miner would never just search the surface; he would dig deep and deeper still until he had found something valuable. Those searching for hidden treasure would never stop with just a cursory glance. They research and use special equipment. They study for years to know the most about the treasure they seek.
We have in our possession the infinite wisdom of God and we spend so little time probing its depths. We have so many resources available to us to help us in our search yet we still do not dig deep as one searching for silver. May this remind us to daily search out GodÕs wisdom and seek to rightly apply it to our lives.
ÒThis habit of living in the element of Scripture is invaluable. To be filled from this Divine treasury; to have large portions of the word daily passing through the mind; gives us a firmer grasp, and a more suitable and diversified application of it.Ó
(Charles Bridges)
A wise man will hear and increase in learning,
And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel
(Proverbs 1:5).
