Well Worn Knees and an Open Book
by Diane Brown
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up
(Deut. 6:7).
We have a tiny new neighbor the first baby for our neighbors. I well remember when our children were born. The excitement and fatigue all rolled into one. One more thing I remember is how each birth drew my attention to the Lord as I thought of the great responsibility of raising each tiny gift from heaven. In prayer we gave each child to the Lord shortly after birth just as Hannah did with Samuel. Those first years of life we found ourselves praying for their safety and health and that they would learn Col. 3:20: Children, obey your parents in all things; for this is well-pleasing unto the Lord.
The elementary years are filled with learning academics, riding bikes, swimming, playing sports and instruments, and so on. What busy years! One mature Christian friend gave us the name of the best book for raising children God's Word. So we taught God's Word through family Bible time and as other teachable moments arose (Deut. 6:4-9). We prayed that through the teaching of the Word our children would Grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (II Peter 3:18).
Now, as the teen years come, children by this stage can do so much independently, but they still need guidance so that they would have wisdom to use the knowledge God is teaching them. Colossians Chapter 3 states many spiritual needs to pray for teens: Verses 8-9 state what we want our teens to put off such as lying and anger. Verses 10-14 states character qualities to put on such as kindness and humbleness. We find ourselves praying more fervently than ever for our children at this stage of life, that they would Let the word of Christ dwell in. . .[them] richly, in all wisdom. . . (Col. 3:16).
Someday, all too soon, the first child will be out of the nest and on his own. My godly Mother-in-law has, by her example, shown me that we will be on our knees for our children throughout their lives. In my mind's eye, I can see Mom with her open Bible on the table as she prays for her children and grandchildren. Someday, that will be me and you (unless you are already a praying grandmother), if the Lord tarries, sitting, praying for our adult children and their families.
Pray without ceasing...
(I Thess. 5:17)
