Unity
by Martha Cocharn, missionary to Japan
ÒBEHOLD, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even AaronÕs beard; that went down to the skirts of his garments, Like the dew of Hermon, and like the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.Ó Psalm 133
I donÕt remember why I first started to love hydrangeas. Perhaps it was because of the pleasant memories of hydrangeas I saw growing luxuriantly and somewhat wildly on three sides of my familyÕs cottage at the shore. Five varieties now grace my yard, and this year all bloomed profusely. The Annabelle variety is a cluster of tiny, pure white flowers which measures about 12 inches wide. The Sumida River Fireworks variety has star-shaped white flowers shooting out in a scattered pattern from the flower base. Framed hydrangeas have flowers only around the edges nothing blooms right in the center. Kodamari (little ball variety) has flowers that look like curled, half-open fists they never open completely. The most familiar variety of hydrangeas starts out pale and matures to a brilliant blue, purple or magenta.
Each hydrangea is made up of small flowers. If you look closely, each tiny flower has its own size, shape and hue. In spite of the differences, though, they make a most pleasing and harmonious whole. And, the common factor in all of the varieties is that one branch nourishes each tiny component of the whole flower. What a wonderful picture of the unity and fellowship we can have as members of the body of Christ and our local church! Each one of us is different in background, salvation experience, and level of Christian growth, but we are all nourished as a whole by the perfect Vine and Branch, our Lord Jesus Christ.
