A Sure Foundation

by Martha Cochran, Missionary to Japan

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon a rock.  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, and it fell not; for it was founded upon a rock (Matt. 7:24, 25).

When I was a child, my family went to Rehoboth Beach , Delaware for two weeks every year.  We had a cottage there that my great grandfather had built years before.  We loved that cottage, but it could not compare to a house two blocks away.  That one was a huge house built right next to the beach.  We loved to walk by it on our way to the boardwalk, especially at night when we could see inside.  The lights revealed a spacious hall just inside the front door, and a wide staircase in the center going up to the second floor.  What wonderful things my two siblings and I imagined as we â¤Ïspied⤠on that house!

One year there was a terrible hurricane along the east coast of America.  My parents drove down to check for any damage to our cottage.  It was safe, and we were all relieved.  Our beautiful dream house, however, was gone, all except for a tiny extension in the back used by the maids.  The foundation of the house built on sand was destroyed by the Atlantic Ocean, and, sadly, the house had collapsed.  Whenever I read the parable of the wise man and the foolish man, I think of that house.

Several years ago my neighbor built a new house.  I expressed surprise when the workers spent almost two months on the foundation.  My neighbor explained that unusually heavy materials would be used for the main part of the house and that extra support was needed.  Without a solid foundation the house would not stand.

In I Corinthians 3:11, Paul says, "For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."  How thankful and secure we can be, knowing that our faith is founded on the Rock.  No matter how severe the winds of trouble may be, our Foundation will stand sure.

I've anchored my soul in the "Haven of Rest,"
I'll sail the wide seas no more;
The tempest may sweep o'er the wild, stormy deep,
In Jesus I'm safe evermore.
