A Controlled Heart

by Di Kwok

But let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God  (I Peter 3:4, NASB).

Every summer when Ben and I visit my family in upstate New York, we all spend a day at Lake George.  One of the most enjoyable parts of the trip is sitting by the lake on a beautiful day looking out at the calm waters. All around the lake, people are busy shopping or involved in various activities. Yet the waters remain still and peaceful to watch.

The peaceful waters of Lake George are a wonderful illustration to me of the inner attitude that the Lord desires for me all the time.  Even though circumstances around me may be difficult or stressful, inside I can have a gentle and quiet spirit that trusts God. This tranquility of spirit comes only from knowing God and His promises. For example, knowing that God promises never to leave or forsake us should encourage us to walk contently and without worry throughout the day (Hebrews 13:5).  The way that we respond to illnesses, stressful work situations, or extremely busy times (like moving overseas!) will reveal to others either a doubting, tempestuous heart or a controlled, peaceful heart.
