Help from the Holy Spirit, Our Comforter, Our Counselor

by Cherie Campbell

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you (John 14:26).

We know that the Holy Spirit indwells us the moment we believe. We are shown in Romans 8:9-11 that we were once dead because of sin, but now we are alive in Christ. The Holy Spirit was given for the purpose of producing the kind of life God wants us to live. We do not pray for the indwelling of the Spirit; it is already ours the moment we believe.

The Bible also tells us to be "filled with the Spirit" (Eph 5:18). We must pray to be filled, that is to say, controlled by, the Holy Spirit. This has to do with our behavior. Ephesians 4:30 tells us to "Grieve not the holy Spirit of God." When we do grieve the Holy Spirit, we must confess and forsake the sin to be restored to a right relationship with the Lord.

It is the Holy Spirit's work in our lives that brings about sanctification. The Holy Spirit uses the Word to help us and teach us. It is the Word that gives us power to obey.

It is then that the fruit of the Spirit is evidenced in our lives. Jesus gives us a picture of a life filled and overflowing (John 7:37-39). As the Holy Spirit fills us, God's Spirit will be manifest in our lives and allow us to reach out and minister to others.

We must be continually in the Word. We must pray for the Holy Spirit to teach us and to guide us into all truth. We must pray for the Spirit to control us that His character might be evidenced in our lives and overflow into the lives of whom we minister.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-25).
