God Himself in Love for Us
by Susan Brinley
And I have led you forty years in the wilderness . . . that ye might know that I am the LORD your God (Deut. 29:5,6).
I now have the dubious distinction of being the mother of a 7th grader, and a male one at that. Everything in our world has changed! Approaching this new phase, IÕve had my own apprehensions about how these changes would unfold.
My best encouragement facing these impending changes came from a dear friend who consistently points me to the Lord Jesus Christ. As a mom who has already weathered two junior high boys, she told me Òthis is when they really begin to face their weaknesses, and likewise their individual gifts and talents begin to emerge. It is a time to begin facing weaknesses and seek new resources in God.Ó
Hmmm. Facing weaknesses? The last thing we want to do as busy students, wives, mothers, coworkers, or friends is show weakness. When we are schedule-driven, our activities, capabilities and challenges are often on display. Frequently women compare schedules and activities in a can-you-top-this fever pitch. We have many expectations to meet of ourselves, of others, or even of God. And in it all, we are fearful of showing weakness.
On the other hand, God Himself in love led His children on a mighty long trek through wilderness to the Promised Land. During this journey they experienced His help, sustenance, and deliverance often through miracles. He also brought them to see their own inadequacies for the needs at hand. God humbled them and tested them, revealing their hearts and motives.
God knows we are each inadequate for the tasks and demands He will allow put upon us. In revealing our weakness, He opens the way to prove Himself as our Source of grace and strength. These times are not just uncomfortable circumstances or a Òrun of bad luck,Ó but rather the opportunity for the LORD God of all to sustain us in love, strength, wisdom and grace through each challenge and to truly bring honor and glory to Himself because we will know that without Him, we couldnÕt have survived.
That is encouragement for us, and the encouragement we can share with others: GodÕs love is with us and His sufficiency is what we really need most.
And He humbled thee. . .that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live (Deut. 8:3).
