The Day God Sent Goldfinches!

by Carol Custer

But my God shall supply ALL your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus  (Philippians 4:19).

As my parents grew older and suffered some health problems, it became clear that at some point, the Lord would take them from this earth.  My emotional self did not wish to consider this, yet I knew that the Lord would help us as he has promised to meet all of our needs, even our emotional and mental needs.

In 1982 my Father became very ill as a result of a major sun stroke.  He had acquired diabetes type II after the sun stroke and had a clot in his leg.  The leg had to be amputated, so I flew to Colorado to be with my parents during the seven-hour surgery.  Before the surgery I was able to read the Bible to him and also to sing his favorite song.  ÒAll the way, my Saviour leads me, what have I to ask beside.Ó While waiting during the surgery, I remembered the many things my Father taught me.  He loved music, and my favorite song for him to play on the high trumpet was ÒWhen the Roll Is Called up Yonder.Ó  Other times he would sing at the top of his baritone voice during milking time with the rain sounding loudly on the tin roof above, ÒOnward Christian SoldiersÓ or ÒRock of Ages, cleft for me.Ó  He taught me to use my horse sense, as he called it.

After the surgery I returned home on Saturday and kept in touch with my Mother by phone.  On Tuesday morning early that April day, the call came from my Mother telling me that my Father had gone home to be with the Lord.  It was difficult for me, and my eyes filled with tears.  I had been standing at the kitchen door with my back to it.  As I turned around to look out the window, a flock of beautiful yellow and black goldfinches landed in my back yard, covering the whole area.  That has never happened since then. It was a lovely, encouraging sight, and I was able to thank the Lord that my Dad was born again and was now with his Saviour in heaven.

Do you have needs?  ÒTell it to JesusÓ He will hear your prayer and give you the courage, strength and grace you need for each day.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and He delighteth in His way.  Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with His hand (Psalm 37:23, 24).
