Conquering Mountains

by Dianne Brown

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me (Philippians 4:19),

What do you fear? Some fear spiders and snakes. Others fear for the daily safety of their children, an adverse medical diagnosis, or the devastation of Mother Nature wiping out all their belongings. Many times we have no control over certain mountainous circumstances in our lives. How do we handle such fearful circumstances?

Paul had many such ÒmountainsÓ as he served the Lord. He lived through treacherous storms, dank prisons, verbal and physical opposition, and more. Yet he found strength as God spoke to him and reminded Paul not to be afraid and that God was with him and nothing would happen to Paul unless God allowed it (Acts 18:9-10). We have that source of daily strength to conquer our fears at our fingertips. Recently, one ten year old found out the strength of GodÕs Word to conquer a fearful mountain.

This ten year old had a medical difficulty that required intervention beginning with two injections. Hearing the plan, the ten year old picked up his shoes, whisked by the doctor and parent and headed for the door. Gentle, firm words seated the ten year old back on the examining table. Usually Bibles are found in the waiting room, but this time God had provided the source of strength in this particular examining room knowing ahead of time the fearful mountain this child would need to conquer. ÒAre you going to let me fix you up?Ó the doctor inquired. The ten year old hung his head with fearful eyes contemplating the question for many minutes. The doctor decided to visit a few other needy patients and would come back for the answer. While the doctor was out, God gave words of wisdom to the parent. Over the next fifteen minutes the ten year old realized that he had a mountain he had to conquer, that the power of GodÕs Word would help him with the pain he would endure, and that this victory would also help him in similar situations in the future. Philippians 4:19 and Joshua 1:9 provided reminders of GodÕs power to help and His comfort and promise to be with him during the procedure. The verses were quoted several times and a time of prayer brought the situation before the throne of grace. ÒI will do it,Ó came the whispered answer. The doctor came in and the procedure got underway. It was still with a great deal of pain, but the child willingly put the situation into the doctorÕs hands and a fearful mountain was conquered that day. When we put our lives into the hands of God and search for strength through His Word, fearful mountains can be conquered—not only for ten year olds, but children of God of any age.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind
(II Timothy 1:7).
