I CAN'T!

by Donna Andersen

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go (Psalm 32:8).

ÒBut Mom, I can't!Ó ÒOf course, you can, Son. Would I ask you to do it if I didn't think you were capable?  And, besides, if you need a little help, I'll be here for you.Ó  Sound familiar?  Perhaps you've had a similar conversation with your children. I've also had it with quite a few discouraged students; and I've told them they'd never be able to accomplish anything for God until they stopped looking at themselves and started looking to God until they stopped worrying about self-confidence and developed God-confidence.

In class, I have my students list different types of brushes hair brushes, toothbrushes, clothes brushes, scrub brushes, etc., and then point out that they were each designed for a specific purpose and that I'm going to use the right brush for the job.  I'm not going to try to scrub the floor with a toothbrush!  I assure my students that their Heavenly Father has given them every talent they need to accomplish His will and that He's not going to ask them to do any job He didn't equip them to do.  And, I remind them that they have God's grace to help them accomplish the task.  Somehow the brush analogy smoothes out the tangles in their thinking.

It all boils down to trusting our Sovereign Lord, His goodness and wisdom.  God's children have the ability to accomplish God's purpose.  And we have the assurance of God's presence and power.  Psalm 32:8 records God's promise ÒI will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go. . . .Ó  ÒBut Heavenly Father, I can't.Ó ÒOf course you can, my child.  Would I ask you to do anything you weren't capable of doing?  And besides, if you need a little help, I'll be here for you.Ó
