Asking and Receiving

by Lisa Crawford, GFA Missions

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you ( Luke 11:9 ).

ÒWhen faith goes to market, it always takes a basket.Ó  Recently, this quotation really grabbed my attention.  It reminded me of how very short my faith often falls.  How often do I pray, without really believing God has answered?  Many times my prayers seem to be just fervent pleadings with no real expectation that God is going to step in and act!  My faith is going to market without a basket.

In Luke 11:1, the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray.   Part of His answer was an invitation to ask and receive. Verse 10 says that ". . . everyone that asketh receiveth.Ó Our gracious God desires to answer our requests, and He is able to give Ò. . .exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or thinkÓ ( Eph. 3:20 ).  So when we ask for something according to God's will, we should fully expect His generous answer.

The Caananite woman, who cried out to Jesus for the healing of her demon possesed daughter, believed and received.  In Matthew 15:22, this desperate mother implored Jesus to help her daughter.  At first He gave her no reply at all.  But her persistent and believing faith would not be turned back and was rewarded in the end. Her prayer was answered.  Jesus healed her daughter.  This woman came to Jesus, knowing she would receive what she had asked for.  Her faith had gone to market with a basket.

Our Almighty God invites us to ask and receive.  He is more than able to answer our prayers in amazing ways.  May our faith be the kind that goes to market with a basket fully expecting to be filled.
