Three Simple Words
by Susan Brinley
Sometimes a simple and even familiar turn of phrase captures the heart and mind. Recently once such phrase in Ephesians 1 caught my attention. Slow down with me and, with a little help from the dictionary, savor three important words from a phrase in Ephesians chapter 1, verse 12, ÒThat we should be to the praise of His glory. . . .Ó
That we should be: Òto have a real state or existence; . . . to become; to remain.Ó* I can apply all these meanings to my relationship with Christ and a desired Òstate of beingÓ in Him.
To the praise: Òa joyful tribute of gratitude or homage paid to the Divine Being, often expressed in song; to commend; . . .to laud or magnify, especially applied to the Divine Being.Ó I can joyfully contribute to the exaltation of God and share His goodness with those around me.
Of His glory: Òpraise, honor, admiration, or distinction, accorded by common consent to a person or thing; honorable; . . . a state of greatness or renown; . . . magnificence; brightness; luster; splendor; brilliancy; . . . an object of which one is or may be proud.Ó Words canÕt describe fully all that GodÕs glory entails, but I can share testimony of His greatness and magnificence with others.
In this Christmas season of busyness, may we seek to become, and to remain, ones who give joyful tribute of gratitude and homage in honor of GodÕs greatness, magnificence and worth.
For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods (Psalm 95:3).
