Keep Thy Heart

by Cherie Campbell

Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life
(Proverbs 4:23  NASB).

Did you know that there are 765 ÒheartÓ verses in the Bible (KJV)?  What a blessing it would be to study them out and learn what God desires of us concerning the matter of our hearts.  The verse above tells us that every part of our lives involves our hearts.  The heart is the whole of our mind, affections, and will, and from the heart flows all of oneÕs actions.

If this is so, and it is, what could we do that would be more important than Òwatching over our hearts?Ó  Dr. Steveson says in his commentary on Proverbs, ÒThe concern for the keeping of oneÕs own mind should transcend any other self-protecting act.  This is so because the mind is the source of every thought, every word, and every action of man.  It is therefore appropriate to saturate oneÕs own mind with the spiritual wisdom so abundantly given in GodÕs Word.Ó

SolomonÕs wisdom was evident in this teaching given to his son.  These verses come just before the one above:  ÒMy son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings.  Do not let them depart from your sight; Keep them in the midst of your heartÓ (Proverbs 4:20-21 NASB).

Keep your heart, keep your heart, keep your heart with all diligence.
Keep it clean, keep it pure, make your love for Christ endure.
Guard your ears; guard your eyes; Pressing onward to the prize.
Lest you fall, lest you fail, Make your love for Christ prevail.
                                                          ~Mac Lynch

Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You
(Psalm 119:11  NASB).
